Meet the faces of the founders & steering committee of Crossroads: (from left to right) Cheri Showalter, Angela Russell, Janie Good, Jill Hurst, and Michelle Weber.
In the summer of 2021, the vision for Crossroads was placed in the hearts of a few moms in the Cocalico area who wanted to provide their children with a different educational experience. What started out as an informal conversation at a local park in early September quickly grew into a much bigger vision as we realized that many options to educate children outside of the public school system currently had waiting lists. Veteran homeschool moms wanted their children to feel plugged into a setting with other children their age, and new homeschool families were fearful of taking the leap of doing something outside their comfort zone all on their own. A "steering committee" was formed to continue the conversation of what it could look like to provide a faith-based, hands-on education within our community.
The women of the "steering committee" came together as strangers but quickly left as friends, realizing that God had joined them together with the same vision and purpose. The goal was to offer an oasis of learning that would combine the best of homeschool with the best of private school, built on a foundation that is unapologetically Bible believing, allowing students to grow and learn with hands-on activities through a hands on learning based curriculum in a Christ-centered environment.
When the committee sat down for their first formal meeting, someone immediately suggested the name "Crossroads" which sparked another committee member to recall Jeremiah 6:16, "This is what the Lord says, 'Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls." Knowing that many families were currently feeling like they were at a "crossroads" with the education system and having a strong desire for something more, we knew this was a "God moment." Crossroads was to be our school name and Jeremiah 6:16 our theme verse. This was just the beginning of many "God sightings" as we watched His provision and hand upon Crossroads, opening doors, stretching our faith and leaving us with no doubt that He was involved in it all.
During the early months of the journey, we watched God birth the plans for Crossroads before our eyes, spending many late nights together planning, making decisions, writing and answering countless texts and emails, and praying with the hope of not only giving children a better learning environment and education but also having a positive impact on the community.
We didn't realize how quickly word would spread and how the community and beyond would embrace and support Crossroads financially and in prayer. We've been humbled by the support of a growing number of local businesses who saw the need and value of what Crossroads would offer.
Looking back, it seems crazy and impossible to imagine that a school could be formed and opened within a few months by a group of moms, but we are constantly reminded that with God, all things are possible. Crossroads, A Community Homeschool, officially opened its doors on January 18, 2022.
